If they want to actually have a chance at taking a good chunk of Minecraft's player base, they need to be impactful right at release and basically have everything Minecraft offers + a lot more. If they had released Hytale without enough it would probably lead to people playing it for a week or two and going back to Minecraft. On the other hand, we've seen a ton of Minecraft clones try to go the early access route and just completely flop because Minecraft has 1000x the amount of content & options and people run out of things to do in the clones way too fast. They definitely had hype and let it pass, no one talks about this game anymore. The game looks amazing, but I’m honestly starting to worry it just won’t ever release in the first place. And also to argue that they are aware of and managing scope creep, but then talk about their new PvP AI that probably doesn’t need to be in the game at launch, and will need to be tuned constantly right now as they are actively working on combat. I find it incredibly strange that they, within the same post, say they don’t want to keep doing weekly screenshots because of how early in development the game still is and the stress it puts on them to release stuff, only for them to then immediately after provide teaser screenshots and footage we haven’t seen before. Even with some of it being thrown out, lots of it clearly isn’t going anywhere. Many games with similarly sized teams are developed from concept to completion in that length of time, and while no doubt this game could be a fair bit more complex than those, it has years worth of work head start on that. I just cannot see how there is still potentially 2 and a half years worth of stuff still left to work on with their team size still growing as fast as it is. I’m all for game delays to make sure a game is polished and done before release, but it’s getting to be a bit much at this point. Yeah it’s frankly getting a bit absurd now how long it seems to be taking. It's had more than 10 years to become a core part of gaming culture, and is a household name that is played and viewed by millions every single day. Minecraft's main advantage is the branding. Microsoft have tried to remake the game with the Windows 10/Android/iOS versions, but the fact they aren't committing to a single version of the game has done nothing but increase their workload. Ultimately however, Mojang's updates are still crippled by the fact their old code has so much technical debt it's like trying to renovate a building built on a foundation of liquid poop. I feel like the bar has been raised as well Mojang definitely improved the speed and quality of their patches ever since Hytale released.įor several years after Microsoft took over, patches seemed to be "1 new block every year".īut after Hytale trailer was released, we've been getting big reworks of core biomes (like the cave and nether updates) every 3 months.
